It is sad that there were Bible translators who did not have access to the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus at the time they were rendering the holy scriptures to english.
From Jn 1:18:
King James Bible
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him
American Standard Version
No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
English Revised Version
No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.
World English Bible
All of those translations are wrong.
From the Sinaiticus:
It is transliterated as Monogenes Theos meaning "only begotten God".
This is also confirmed by the Vaticanus:
Also the only begotten God.
It is obvious that the translators of those english translations were not able to read these 2 codices. If they did, and still omitted to translate Theos to God, then that's a great crime indeed.
The King James Version, which have been very popular, perhaps influenced religions who did not believe Christ as God. Anyway, that's a topic for my pastor the discuss. I can only comment on the technicality on what can easily be observed from the Sinaiticus and Vaticanus.
And thanks be to God, some were able to tranlate 1:18 faithfully:
No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
New American Standard Bible
And apparently, "only begotten God" is also reflecting on Aramaic manuscripts:
No man has seen God at any time; The Only Begotten God Who is in the bosom of The Father, he has declared him.”
Aramaic Bible in Plain English
To God the Father and to Jesus, the begotten God be the glory!

I'd like to promote the blog of my pastor, esoriano.wordpress.com, which bested the blog of the popular author of The Alchemist, Paolo Coelho.
